Easy, Cheesy Dutch Oven Potatoes

Easy, Cheesy Dutch Oven Potatoes

Whether you're reminiscing on camp trips long past, hunting expeditions or even a backyard cookout, one bite of Dutch oven cheesy potatoes is sure to bring back good and tasty memories.

Ooey-gooey cheesy goodness paired with the salty crunch of bacon makes Dutch oven cheesy potatoes a fan favorite for any outdoor adventure. Break out the dutch oven and make this easy, cheesy recipe your very own.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 12” Dutch Oven
  • 1 lb Bacon
  • 1 Yellow Onion, chopped
  • 1 lb or more Medium Cheddar Cheese, grated or cut into small cubes
  • 3 lbs Russet Potatoes, cut into bite sized squares
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (optional)
  • Salt & Pepper or your favorite seasoning

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the Dutch Oven Over Charcoal or a Camp Stove

When cooking with charcoal, place charcoal around the bottom of the Dutch oven (approximately 10 briquettes) then cover the lid in the warm charcoal (approximately 14 briquettes). Be ready to adjust for wind and outside temperatures by adding coals as they burn down. Try to keep the briquettes near the outside edge to keep the bottom from burning.

2. Cook the Bacon

Cut bacon into 1 inch pieces and fry in a dutch oven until crisp. Then add the sliced onion and cook with the bacon until the onion is slightly transparent.

3. Add the Potatoes

Add the sliced potatoes and stir the onions and bacon throughout. Season with salt and pepper or your favorite seasoning. Allow the potatoes to cook until softened (approximately 45 minutes), stirring occasionally to prevent the bottom from overcooking.

4. Say Cheese

Once the potatoes are cooked, remove the Dutch oven from bottom heat and stir in half of your grated or blocked cheese. Add the remaining half of the cheese to the top and put the lid on just long enough for the cheese to melt. If you prefer less cheese, add a little butter to help keep the potatoes moist.

5. Let’s Eat!

All that’s left is to serve and enjoy! If you like a little kick, try adding green chilies to this ooey-gooey dish.

These timeless cooking vessels have remained popular throughout the years for more reasons than one.

1. Heat Retention

Dutch ovens and cast iron pans are incredibly versatile. They seamlessly transition between different cooking methods, from stovetop and oven to the outdoor grill or even a campfire. You can sauté, braise, roast, bake or even fry using these multipurpose tools. Their ability to withstand high temperatures makes them perfect for both gentle simmering and high-heat searing.

3. Durability

These cooking vessels are also renowned for their durability. Crafted from high-quality iron, they are built to last a lifetime and beyond. Unlike their non-stick counterparts, Dutch ovens and cast iron pans can withstand the test of time, enduring countless cooking sessions without losing their integrity. Seasoning Dutch Ovens & Cast Iron Pans

If you’ve ever cooked with a Dutch oven or cast iron pan chances are you’ve heard about “seasoning” those tools, but what does this mean? Even though it sounds like adding salt and pepper to your pan, “seasoning” refers to oil that is baked onto cast iron pans and dutch ovens.

When you season cast iron your cookware will take on that classic black patina that you expect from your pans and Dutch ovens. It also forms a natural, non-stick surface and helps prevent rusting. A well-seasoned dutch oven or cast iron pan might require a little extra attention, but these reliable tools will last generations with the proper care.

Like any cooking utensil, Dutch ovens and cast iron pans require proper care and maintenance to ensure their cooking capabilities. Caring for and maintaining your cast iron pans and Dutch ovens means properly cleaning and storing them.

When cleaning your dutch ovens and cast iron, make sure you are using the right tools. Rinse your pan or Dutch oven with a little warm water and use a stiff brush to remove any stuck-on food or residue. Use a chainmail scrubber to lightly scuff the cooking surface and interior walls and to remove any sticky residues.

It is also important to heat your Dutch oven or pan on a medium-low heat for five to six minutes to evaporate any moisture instead of towel drying. Add a very thin layer of oil to the cast iron before storing to help prevent rust and store in a safe place with a paper towel in the lid to wick away any moisture.

While these cook tools are durable, they can still be damaged. The best way to keep your cast iron in tip-top shape is by using it regularly so make sure you have plenty of tasty recipes to try!
